The main theme is the conflict between civilization and savagery in man, as embodied by the two groups of British schoolchildren led by Ralph and Jack.

The main symbol is the pig’s head on a stake, which represents the horror of evil. The conch represents order, rule-based behavior, and democracy. Piggy’s glasses symbolize his ability to see what others cannot (wisdom). Other symbols are the dead pilot hanging from a tree by his parachute, and the cruiser that “saves” the children at the end of the novel. They represent the adult world’s inability to rescue the children from savagery.

The title of the novel is itself symbolic. “Lord of the Flies” is the English translation of Beelzebub — a name for the Devil. The pig’s head is surrounded by buzzing flies, and pork was considered unclean by the ancient Hebrews.

main theme: an attempt to trace the failings of society back to the failings of the individual / or that no government structure no matter how well thought out or benevolent can exist without adhering to the morality of the individuals. symbols are the glasses, pig, fire, conch, and island. The climax is when the boys find “the beast” because it creates a sense of fear and panic that causes even the sensible ones to forget reason, and it also starts to split the island (figuratively).
