‘The Straight Dope’ has covered this excellently. Note that the evidence suggests that a fighting will is little or no help with illness.

However, giving up is actually bad, because people may not follow doctor’s advice or take their meds, which is most likely to be harmful.

So you do have to be positive enough to believe that the doctors know what they are doing, and that you might get better if you follow their instructions.

They also mention the case of a man who amputated his own arm when it was trapped in a rockfall. He wasn’t ill so the question doesn’t exactly apply, but strength of will definitely helped him to survive.

It sure doesn’t hurt to have the will to live.

I’ve got two uncles, both with rapid-spreading cancer.

One’s basically wanting to die, he has nothing to live for, or so he thinks. He gets worse every time I see him. He doesn’t even leave his house half the time to go get his chemo. He lies around his house and won’t even answer his phone.

The other is about the same age, has a two year old daughter, and even had a chunk of his brain removed to take out some cancer. His diagnosis is worse than that of the other uncle, but he seems to be doing better. He feels he actually has something to live for(his daughter and wife). Even though he has a chunk of his brain out, and his diagnosis is worse, he still fights the fight and overall is in much better condition(from what I’ve seen), than my other uncle.

So in my honest opinion, yes, it can play a role. Plus, if you’re lazy and don’t get up and do anything, you aren’t going to strengthen your body any, and it will progressively get weaker anyway. So I guess it just depends on how much willpower they really have.

Of coarse it is. If you go and do anything half hearted more times than not you fail. If a good attitude is used to fight off illness the worst thing that can happen is you still feel good about yourself despite what you have been unfortunate to come into contact with

It helps, but it can’t be everything. Being someone who battled an illness myself, books like “The Secret” would anger me because they taught that people brought on illnesses themselves. That is absolutely not the case.

I think that if you are more positive it will make things easier for you and less stressful. The more stress the body produces the more it hinders your recovery. Do things you enjoy doing and that make you feel happy. When I was sick my parents bought me a kitten and I took up knitting and drew a lot. If it is you that is sick, I hope you feel better soon! 🙂

I believe it is. I know a young man who contracted cancer. The doctors were not even going to treat him because they gave him NO chance whatsoever to make it – in fact they gave him 6 weeks to live. Not only did he live, but he made them give him chemo, he survived that and the surgery and it’s been 2 years and he’s still here, alive and kicking. He is strong willed and determined to live and he believes that each day is precious and he lives it fully. He’s one tough cookie, that’s for sure, don’t know if I could have done what he did, but he’s an inspiration!!

Yes, as is sense of ownership of the disease, and sense of humor. There is research on it. Strength of will can help, as well as hinder. If you deny your illness and work too hard, and get tired, and get immune compromised that is a bad thing. You can psychologically help your body with good mental stuff. Actually laughing works wonders.

In certain cases yes.Holding on to the will for living keeps you alive longer but will not necessarily make you better. The illness will take you eventually because of your body’s complications to function. The will to fight will keep you alive longer or even in some cases “cure” the said illness.
