Is it possible for a book to have conflict but no resoultion?

In the book Lupita Manana i know that the conflict is the troubles the characters face to get into America so they can help their mother pay off the debt she owes. In the end it doesn’t say if their mother pays off the debt or not and the other main character was caught by immigration.

So i really dont know what the resolution is.

Of course it is possible, but I doubt the book would be successful, or even published. Without resolutoin what would be the point. It is like kissing your sister; nice, but not very satisfying.

Some of the best books/stories written don’t have resolutions. A lot of times there is no resolution to reflect the state of society, which it sounds like your book might be doing. However, it sounds like you might be reading this book for a class, and unless it’s a very advanced class, I doubt you would be asked to analyze something without a resolution. The fact that one of the characters was caught by immigration sounds like a resolution, anyway.

Also, look for an internal conflict that’s not so straightforward – the mother or one of the other characters dealing with depression, what to do in the situation, being torn between her identity from the old country and who she is now, or also conflicts between the characters. See how those types of conflicts might be resolved.

Hope that helps!

yes it is very possible some books let you come up with your own conclusion such as “the lady and the tiger”. other books are part of a series and leave you with one or two resolution but six or seven cliff hangers like “the wheel of time” series.
