Intro. to Literature class?

I have never done a literature class before. My teacher is very analytical about the short stories that we are reading right now and am having a difficult time. My question is this: We have to find the exposition and the crisis, among many others but these are the hardest for me, for each story. How do I find them when it is not obvious?

Until you get the hang of doing this on your own, all it takes is a bit of practice, I suggest that you go to the reference section of your library and look up the story in Contemporary Literary Criticism. This will give you an overall analysis of the story; why the author wrote the way he did, what it means, etc. DON’T STOP THERE! Then, go back and find these sections in the story: what does it mean to you? If you think the author is saying something, find the passages that show him doing just that.

Also, it helps in understanding a short work if you can find the “humanity” of the piece. There’s always at least one, where the author focusses on the emotions, lives, conflicts, and consequences of living.

Hope this will get you started.
