If the equation is in parentheses, it is not an absolute value question, so x-5 = 3 becomes x-5+5 = 3+5 becomes x = 8.
For absolute values, you would have equation between vertical lines Ix-5I = 3, in which case one variable is solved for as above, the second as follows:
invert the left side of the equation
-x+5 = 3 becomes -x+5-5 = 3-5 becomes -x= -2 x = 2
proof: Ix-5I = 3 I8-5I = 3 I3I = 3
Ix-5I = 3 I2-5I = 3 I-3I =3 3=3
