In the Crucible explain how Aurthur Miller uses the opening scene of Act II to create tension.?

Any ideas you have or if you can give me the links to any good sites I would be so grateful. It is for my Enlgish Literature coursework due in on Friday.

Point to consider:

Effects of character and action. Effect of dramatic devices. Layer of meaning in the language. Social and historial and cultural setting. Language.

first, theres the overall tension generated by abigail and her friends as they send more and more people to jail over baseless charges of being a witch…then theres the fact that John proctor’s maid, mary warren, went to the trials against johns direct order not to

in a more character-to-character sense…tension is created between john and his wife after he tells her he was alone with abigail.

as if this is not enough, when mary warren comes home with a poppet (doll) and the police come and search the proctor home and find the doll, theyre told that abigail bled at the courthouse as if she had been stuck by a pin (they think elizabeth used the doll as a voodoo doll to stab abigail) and so elizabeth is taken off to jail, further increasing johns hatred towards abigail.
