I think it’s to compete as to who should be the leader of the group. Dont take that as gold, it has been some time since I read it.

Ralph and Jack the two insist on going after the beast because of the fact all the youngsters on the island are so terrified of the beast that they are no longer construction huts or observing the sign hearth as they are excited approximately being frightened of the beast. so becasue of this ralph and jack the two unify to flow out and locate the beast so they could resume the order they meant to have on the island.

Jack MUST go.. he is the animal part in all of us that hunts and kills. Ralph is the moderating force.. he is compelled to go to try to keep some balance in the group. After Spiritual death, Simon, he begins to feel some of the animal need himself.
