Let x represent Jane’s speed in mph. So, Mike’s speed is x+5

4(x+x+5) = 228

8x + 20 = 228

8x = 208

x = 26

So, x + 5 = 31

Mike rides at a VERY impressive 31 miles per hour average.

We know that the two kids ride at a combined 228 miles / 4 hours which equals 57 miles/hour.

Let’s say that the rate that Jane rides is X miles per hour, MIke rides at X + 5 miles per hour.

Set up the equation:

X + X + 5 = 57

2X + 5 = 57

2X = 52

X = 26 miles per hour (Janes speed)

26 + 5 = 31 miles per hour (Mikes speed)

Okay so first, you should know that RxT=D. rate multiplied by time equals to the distance. you should make a table. ill try to explain the best as i can without it though..

okay soo. Mike=x+5, since his RATE (R) is 5 miles faster than jane. which makes Jane=x. the TIME is 4 for both of them. the DISTANCE is 228 of course. so you need to find out mike’s rate, which is x+5. this is your equation:

4x+4(x+5)=228

i hope you’ve learned the distributive property already. so you distribute the 4 to the x+5. that makes it 4x+20. so now the equation is:

4x+4x+20=228.

now combine the 4x’s. now the equation is:

8x+20=228.

subtract the 20 on both sides to cancel it out.

now you have:

8x=208.

x=26.

your not done yet. one of the guys above me made this mistakee. remember that mike is x+5. so take the 26 and substitute it. so your final answer is:

x=31mph

hope this helps! :]
