If I do the FOIL rule… Why doesn’t this work?

(-m+4)(m-12)

Why do I get -m^2+16m-48.

Thats not right and I know it. Am I multiplying wrong?

It’s right. Maybe the “wrong” part is the signs. Because, based on what I learned from my teacher/s here in my country, the standard form is ax^2+bx+c=0, wherein a=positive integer.

In your answer, the “a” (-m) is negative. So, multiply both sides of the equation by negative 1 (-1).

It becomes:

-1(-m^2+16m-48)= -1(0)

So.. The answer becomes:

m^2-16m+48 = 0.

Okay?

Actually, your answer is right.

-m*m= -m^2

-m*-12=12m

4*m=4m

-12*4=-48

which equals to:

-m^2+16m-48

good job solving it right. 😀

-m^2+16m-48

nope, that’s right. maybe the answer key’s just wrong

its (-m^2 + – 12m + 4m + 48) which is also -m^2 – 8m + 48 the -12m is negative so -12m + 4 m is -8m…thats what you did wrong.
