Our ship just bombarded the shores along the coast of Turkey, Gallipoli I’m told.

The countryside seems deserted. No return fire, no camp fires – complete darkness and silence.

April 23rd. Pick up troops from Bristol. All Australian and New Zealanders. ANZACS they call themselves. All raw and inexperienced. No one has ever shot at a real person, poor b……s.

April 24th Trip over rough. Many sea sick and they have to land just after midnight. Glad its not me.

April 25th (1:00 am) Landing boats are over the side full of ANZACS.What’s that? Gun fire from the shore. Big guns and rifles. Where did they come from? Maybe our attack two days ago told them we were coming. Has this turned a victory into a defeat, even before it started? Only time will tell. Hope it has a good ending.

First light. Why here? Steep cliffs narrow beach. Look at those dead. The beach is covered. Look down there, about a mile, NO cliffs, wide beach. The commander missed it by a mile what an expensive mistake.
