Last year we had our students debate the wonder that is myspace. We brought up issues like predators, and how many young people in middle school lie about their age on their profile. We also brought up issues like school personnel looking up students on myspace to access student behavior and what is going on in their world. We passed out articles like the ones below, and ask the students to pick a side and argue that side in essay form, and then during a class debate. Is myspace a good thing, or bad thing? Does authority have a right to look at a public profile to determine threats and punishments, or is it an evasion of privacy.

We got a really good reaction out of the students because it is not only an interesting and current topic for them, it also sparked opinions and deep thinking about dangers and privacy rights.

– If you could be a character in one book of your choice who would you be and in which book?

– If you had to spend 5 years on a deserted island with only 7 items to bring with you, what would those items be?

– Describe your most embarrasing experience.

– If you had the power to create a new animal, what would it be like?

How about things that relate to them like cell phone etiquette? Also, topics such as the dangers of driving and texting or the pros and cons of school uniforms. I would also like to know what they think of celebrities such as Lindsey Lohan and Paris Hilton as role models. Any of these topics would be interesting to read.
