I need Math Help. Thank you to those willing to help you have no idea how much you are helping me.?

Ok so yes I am very bad with math. It has been quite awhile since i have taken a math class. I am taking a test on Monday so I need help with a few questions. I would appreciate really detailed answers(including how to place decimal points). Thank you so much! And I do have books to help but I want to use all resources available. Oh and I can not use a calculator with these problems.

1. (Convert the following to a decimal) 99/44 (the answer is 2.25) Now i simplified the fraction to 9/4. And i do understand you have to divide the numerator by the denominator. So that would be 4 inot 9 which goes in twice. Well, after that step I am lost! I don’t know where to put decimal ponits or how to come up with the answer as 2.25

2. Find 5% 0f 20 (the answer is 1)

3. Convert the following percent to a decimal: 0.5% (answer is 0.005) and 5% (the answer is 0.05)

4. And what numbers 11/10, 4/5, 7/6, 13/12, 10/11, 21/10

a. closest to 1 (answer is 21/20)

b. farthest from 1 (answer is 4/5)

ok first u simplfied incorrectly 99/44 is 2 and 11/44 or 2 and 1/4 and 1/4 is same as 100/4 so thats 25 hence the 2.25

2; change this to a fraction ratio ie 5/100 = x/20 then simplify by dividing by 5 and x must equal1

3 percetages are just that number over 100 or divided by 100 so 5% is as you said .05 and .5% is .005

4 change these fractions to a decimal and compare ie 11/10 is 1.1 4/5 is .8 7/6 is 1.16666666repeat the 6 13/12 is about 1.087 10/11 is about .909 and 21/10 is 2.1 so if there were a 21/20 wich is 1.05 that would be closest if not then its the 13/12 and if there is a 21/10 thats the farthest if not then 4/5 is correct

hope this helps

It sounds like you haven’t mastered division. In addition to the help provided here, I would recommend you get extra help and practice doing division problems.

For your first question, you are right: the fraction simplifies to 9/4. When you do 9 divided by 4, you get 2, with 1 left, right? You add a decimal point to your answer, put a 0 next to the one, and now you have 10 divided by 4. The answer is 2 and you’ll have 2 left. You should now have as part of your answer 2.2. Add a 0 next to the 2 you have left from the subtraction. Now you have 20. 20 divided by 4 is 5. Your answer is 2.25. See this site for further explanation:

http://www.mathsisfun.com/long_division3.html Unfortunately, that’s the only site I could come up with that should whole numbers being divided.

2. 5% is the same thing as 5/100, or 0.05. 0.05 x 20 = 1.00 or 1.

3. 0.5% means .5/100 which is the same thing as 5/1000. 5 thousandths is 0.005. Look at it this way:

100% = 100/100 = 1

10% = 10/100 = 0.1

1% = 1/100 = 0.01

0.1% = 0.1/100 = 0.001

0.01% = 0.01/100 = 0.000 1

and so on. Do you see why the answers you have are what they are?

4. I’m guessing in your list, the last term is supposed to be 21/20, since that is one of the answers. If you were to do the division, you would see that it truly is closest to 1. It’s because you have the greatest number of ‘pieces’ to make the whole, so being only one off of that means you aren’t very far away. The 4/5 has the largest ‘pieces’ (think of it as a pie cut into the fractions), which is why being only one piece away from the whole for it is the farthest from being 1.

ADDED: You didn’t simplify incorrectly, as the other answer suggests. In math, there’s always more than one way to reach and answer, especially when looking at fractions since they convert to decimal, improper, mixed, percentages, are a form of division…
