An experiment is any process or study which results in the collection of data, the outcome of which is unknown.

Qualitative data is data from observations that you can’t quantify or count.

Dependent Variable: the variable that the experimenter hypothesizes is “affected by,” or “related to,” the independent variable. It is the “outcome” or “effect” variable, usually a measure of the subjects’ performance resulting from changes in the independent variable.

Independent variables, also called predictor variables, regressors, controlled variables, manipulated variables, or explanatory variables, are those whose values are controlled or selected by the experimenter to determine its relationship to an observed phenomenon (the dependent variable).

Observation: A single data point collected in an experiment; it could be qualitative or quantitative.

Quantitative data: Data from observations you can count.

If this or another answer here proves helpful in your research, you can encourage good answers by choosing one answer as the “best answer.”

Cheers,

Bruce
