I need an extended essay topic (hopefully to do with medicine)?
But besides surgery or anything like that, I’m open to any kind of thing to do with medicine. Not science though, science is way too broad, way too many tedious subjects that I won’t have interest in. Medicine, surgery, the body and viruses and that kind of stuff is a big yesyes, that I would love to write about.
Please help. =)
Favorite Answer
Carotid Endardectomy…basically this is a procedure where the surgeon goes in and removes fatty plaque build-up from the carotid arteries in the neck.
The chemistry and biology of this is that the body stores the fat here because too much fat is being consumed in the body.
You can actually hear and feel the heart beat in the neck.
When a doctor/nurse examines a patient for this abnormality they may hear what is called a bruits. It is a sound created as the blood flow is interfered with as it trys to fit through narrowed artery.
There is lots of information on cardiac disease and on this particular medical procedure.
Also another interesting topic….is on virus mutations….or bacterial mutations……….such as MRSA……or Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an isolate of the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus that has acquired genes encoding antibiotic resistance to all penicillins, including methicillin and other narrow-spectrum β-lactamase-resistant penicillin antibiotics.[1] MRSA was discovered for the first time in 1961 in the UK, but it is now widespread in the hospital setting. MRSA is commonly termed a superbug.
MRSA may also be known as oxacillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (ORSA) and multiple-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Strains of S. aureus that are non-resistant to methicillin are sometimes called methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) if an explicit distinction must be made.
Although MRSA has traditionally been seen as a hospital-associated infection, community-acquired MRSA strains have appeared in recent years, notably in the U.S. and Australia.[2] The abbreviations CA-MRSA (community-associated MRSA) and HA-MRSA (hospital-associated MRSA) are now commonly seen in medical literature.

Another interesting topic would be …… botox
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botulinum_toxin
Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is one of the most poisonous naturally occurring substances in the world, and it is the most toxic protein.[1] Though it is highly toxic, it is used in minute doses both to treat painful muscle spasms, and as a cosmetic treatment in some parts of the world. It is sold commercially under the brand names Botox and Dysport for this purpose. The terms Botox and Dysport are trade names and are not used generically to describe the neurotoxins produced by the clostridia species.
Also, you could write about the MRSA or methacillin resistant staphaeureus virus and what it is and how it affects the community. It is easily spread and even abundant in the community.
Pretty much any subject to do with the human body is biology based. Surgery though is a practice on the body and not specific to biology or chemistry.
