I’m Stuck!!?

After having an argument, Romero and Julietta walk away from each other at a right angle. If Romero walks 5 miles in the same time that Julietta walks 12 miles (she was really angry), what is the shortest distance they have to travel when they decide to make up?

Essentially this word problem is solving for the third side of a triangle.

Say Romero goes north for 5 miles, and Julietta walks east 12 miles, then the shortest distance between them would be a straight line (which would be diagonal). Since you know they walked at a right angle to each other, then you’re solving for the hypotenuse of a right triangle.

Recall Pythagorean Theorem for right triangles, which states c^2 = a^2 + b^2, or solving for c which is our unknown side, c = sqrt(a^2 + b^2).

So we plug in our values:

c = sqrt(25 + 144)

c = sqrt (169)

c = 13

So the shortest distance they will travel to make up is 13 miles.

sqrt(5^2+12^2) = sqrt(169) = 13miles

Is this the whole question?Because this doesn’t seem to make sense…
