there are many different types of locusts. what you might be referring to is a cicada, which is actually not a locust. the cicada lives underground for 17 years. then they come out into the world, shed an exoskeleton, mate, if female lay eggs, and die. then the eggs will hatch, make their way into the ground, and the process repeats itself. hope this helps!
