For.

In this era all are very busy. Both the husband and wife to work to make both ends meet. So no time to look after the parents. Especially because nuclear families and the number of children is one or maximum two. Parents require extra care and medical facility.

Against.

It is the duty of all to look after their parents especially during their old age when they are helpless. The children should show gratitude towards their parents by taking care of them during their old age.

Visit an old age home (“nursing home” in the US) and learn the answer for yourself. An hour in such a place is worth a world of written accounts.

Most are inadequately funded and many smell of either urine or whatever other odor has been used to cover it. Some residents ask incessantly for help. Whether they need the help or are only–like a small child–seeking attention is a continual question for the overworked staff; however, those pleas for help are a part of the ambiance that is difficult to ignore.

It is hard to decide which is the greater tragedy, the Alzheimer patient whose mind is gone, but whose body is healthy, or the older person, still bright, trapped in a frail body without mobility, enduring deafness, blindness, and/or chronic pain.

The need is obvious. How that need compares with other needs is one reason for debating societies.

I’ll end where I began. Go see for yourself, or you won’t know what you are talking about.

Assisted living facilities are going to be highly needed. The population is aging significantly due to the baby boomers that are getting older. It is the same reason that social security is in a crisis.

Longer life expectency leads to larger population and larger need. The number of elderly grow but there are no improvements in retirement or pension conditions.
