I am so stuck… Please help! (Functions)?

I am so stuck, I feel like an idiot. Here are my problems:

Which of the following does not represent y as a function of x?

a. 3x^2 + y = 9

b. x + 4y = 22

c. x + 2y^2 = 6

d. y + 5x^2 = 2

e. 9x + 3 – 2y

There are three of these problems, and I feel like an idiot because I can’t even remember how to rearrange the problem to y = mx + b or whatever. Please help! Thanks!

At least you recognize the mx + b! Isolate the y term by adding or subtrqacting the other terms on the side of the eq’n where the y is. In a, for example, subtract 3x^2 from both sides: y = 9 – 3x^2. Similar procedure for b – d. But e is not an equation, so cannot be a function of x in the form you indicated.

E is not a function because there is no equal sign. To be a function one must = something of the other. (x,y)

y = 4 times x (2,8) (5,20)

y=x+3 (4,7) (10,13)

or

x=1/3 y (3,9) (4,12)

Hope this helps!
