You can check for bacteria with one of those sticky petri dishes science people use. It’s pretty gross to see the results of things like water fountains and door knobs.

Take some white tiles, put a thin smear of vaseline on, leave them in the public place for a week then analyse the germs, bugs, etc stuck there.
