How to solve this word problem????

A woman drove part of a 185 mi trip at 50m.h and the rest at 55m/h. Find the distance she traveled at 50m/h if her total driving time was 3 h and 30 minutes.

Please don’t just give me the answer, but explain what I have to do to get the answer. This word problem makes absolutely no sense to me.

This question seems to be VERY vague. It doesnt have any of the usual limits that other questions do, such as saying how long she has been driving each section or anything. For all the questions asks she could have traveled the entire way at 50 miles an hour. The best way to answer this question would be two linear equations. You can follow what the post above this one says, but if you learn how to do this then when she asks about 20000 miles and gives huge times where you cant guess and check like the other post, then this method works 100% of the time. It is long, but very very detailed.

x – Time driven at 50 mph in hours

y – Time driven at 55 mph in hours

Since we are calculating with miles per HOUR we will have to convert 3 hours and 30 minutes into hours. = 3.5 hours

First equation:

x + y = 3.5

2nd equation: Understand the equation d = ts. In other words distance = time * speed

50x + 55y = 185

50x – Distance traveled at 50 mph

55x – Distance traveled at 55 mph

Since the problem says that when you add these two distances it will equal 185 miles, I put a 185 on the other sides of the equals sign.

Solve these two equations: I have a method that I learned for this part, but there are other ways that your teacher might have shown you. Notice that I will be creating other equations as I go along, but all of them come from changing one of the two original equations.

x + y = 3.5 —- Equation 1

50x + 55y = 185 —- Equation 2

Equation 1 * 50 = 50x +50y = 175 —- Call It Equation 3

Subtract Equation 2 and Equation 3:

X cancels out: 50x – 50x

Final: 5y = 10 —-y = 2—- So she drove for 2 hours at 55 miles per hour.

Plug this answer into an equation above for:

x + 2 = 3.5 x = 3.5 – 2 x = 1.5—-She drove for 1.5 hours at 50 miles an hour

To check these answers plug the two numbers that you got into the 2nd equation:

50*(1.5) + 55*(2) = 185 ?? 110 + 75 = 185 Checks Out

Back to your original question… Find the distance she traveled at 50 mph would be …

d = ts

d = 50 * 1.5 = 75—– YOUR ANSWER IS 75 MILES

well you kind of have to guess and check but if you drive for half an hour at 55 then you would go 30miles and if you add another hour at 55 then you would have gone 85miles and have 100 miles left which is 2 hours at 50 mph so thats

going 55mph: you go 1 hour and 30 min

going 50mph: you go 2 hours and that adds up to 3 hours and 30 min and 185 miles.

let the distance travelled @50 m.h. be x

So the balance distance is 185-x

Time taken for travelling x miles @ 50m.h is x/50 hrs

Time taken for travelling balance distance @ 55 m/h is

(185-x)/55

given that x/50+(185-x)/55=3.5hours

or 11x+10(185-x)=3.5×550

or x=1925-1850=75miles

balance=110 miles

definite you are able to label the variable x as width and length may be x + 12 make an equation 2x + 2(x+12) = 156 for the reason which you upload all factors to get perimeter then u remedy for x yielding the respond x = 33 = width x + 12 = 40 5 = length

Ugh…I hate math…that’s why I picked a college degree in which I only had to take 1 math class!!

Sorry I’m of no help, but just wanted to say I’m proud of you for wanting to know HOW to do it and not just the answer, like a lot of people on here only want! Good for you! I’m sure you’ll go far in life!
