Oil and water form separate layers when mixed together and when you think about that fact in terms of density. And mix together oil and water, you will see that oil is lighter in density than water and floats on top. An oil spill would not be as bad as it is if it was heaver and sank to the bottom of Prince William Sound, but it floated on top and thus soaked all marine birds, and was swept by waves unto beaches. Requiring massive cleanup.
