What is the correct and articulate way to write this in my essay. Its a bit long so am writing it below …?

I am writing about 19th century literature and i want to ask a rhetorical question that i will be answering later. To what extent do authors write from personal experience … Is society portrayed how they percived it to be in their own experience or are there restrictive measures placed upon what they can or cannot write about as women writers.

Does that make sense … the use of the words ‘restrictive measures’ in that sentence or can i say it in a better way?

Thanks everybody who might answer

‘Is a female authors perception of society coloured by the restrictions placed upon her? ‘ Might be one better way. It’s certainly shorter… you seem to have used an awful lot of unnecessary words.

Not sure if this captures your thougt exactly, but might be a start.

Do authors portray society based on the prism of their experiences, or are there restrictions placed on them by society about what they may write about women authors?

I suggest:

“To what extent could authors write from personal experience? Was society portrayed as they actually experienced it, or were there social restrictions on what they could write as women?”
