First, put a decimal after the first non-zero number: 6.2

Then count how far the decimal moved from where it was originally, in the case, 7 places. This is your exponent for the power of 10: 6.2 X 10^7

scientific notation is writing a number in the form

a x 10^n where a is between 1 and 10.

To write a number between 1 and 10, put the decimal point immediately to the right of the first non-zero digit. The first non-zero digit in this number is 6, so put the decimal point to the right of 6. That makes 6.2. Notice it is between 1 and 10. To find the power of ten, count the number of places you had to move the decimal point to get 6.2. It had to be moved 7 places.

Answer is 6.2 x 10^7

Note: The 7 is positive since this number is big and positive powers of 10 make big numbers. If the original number had been a fractional decimal, the power would have been negative since negative powers of ten are fractions less than 1.

62000000….

it looks like this when you make it a decimal:

62000000.0

move the decimal point between 6 and 2 making it like this:

6.2000000

then count the number of places that your decimal point moved:

it moved 7 times…so the answer is:

6.2×10^7

=D
