How do you subtract whole numbers with mixed fractions (16-8 3/8)?

what do you do with the mixed fraction? Do you turn it into an improper fraction?

Easiest way is to change the whole number- make it 15 8/8ths and subtract to get 7 5/8ths.

you can turn it into a mixed fraction or you can take only part of the whole number as needed (sort of like borrowing)

using your problem, we could do it like this:

16 – 8 3/8 =

[(16*8) – (8*8+3)]/8 = and you can work that out the rest of the way

or (in excruciating detail)

16 – 8 3/8 =

16-8-3/8=

8-3/8 =

7+1-3/8 =

7+8/8-3/3

7+(8-3)/8 =

7 5/8

(you should be able to do all those steps in your head quicker than you can write just the problem)

You turn the fraction into a decimal.

So it the question is 5 – 4 1/4

Turn it into 5-4.25

Or in the case of your question, put the 16 over 1, make the mixed into an improper and find a common demonimator

Change 16 into a fraction, which is 16/1.

Then change 8 3/8 into an improper fraction:

8 x 8= 64. 64+3=67.

so its 67/8

so now you do 16 minus 67/8.

You turn the 16 into a fraction like 16 over 1 then you find a common denominator.

borrow from the 16 to make it 15 and you will have 8/8 as another fraction. 16-8 8/8-3/8=?

Turn a one into 8/8 (or whatever denominator you need, remember that they must be the same to subtract or add)

and subtract the fractions and then the #s
