How do you solve this?

40 cm^2 = ___ m^2

I though tha answer was .4 but I was wrong. I guess it has to do with the fact that the cm and m are being squared. Please explain/work-out the problem.

Thanks!

100cm = 1m

now you have cm^2

so this says to square

then 10000cm^2=1m^2

40cm^2 in m^2 will be lesssince you are converted to a larger unit

40cm^2/10000=0.004 m^2

The answer I came to was 4.

40^2=1600cm

1600cm=16m

the square root of 16=4.

therefore

40cm^2=4m^2
