The trick here is to use what I like to call the gift-wrapping method. When you give a gift, you put the gift in a box, you wrap the box in wrapping paper, and then you but ribbon around the wrapping paper. Does the recipient of your gift un-do these changes in the same order? Does one open the box, then tear the paper, then cut the ribbon? No – changes must be un-done in the opposite order in which they were made. The same is true in Math.

The values, -8 and 5, are almost irrelevant. The important idea here is that, according to the order of operations, the multiplication happened first (box), then the addition (wrapping paper).
