how do you know what the theme of a book is???
so i have to do this project for school on the book “the color purple” and i have to put some words on a poster and explain how they relate to the theme of the book. i have decided some important words are love, violence, adversity, self-worth.& friendship. but i don know how to explain how they tie into the theme. mostly because im not sure what the theme is yet.
any suggestions of what the theme and some good words are are very much appreciated.

The theme is the over-all message the story conveys. It is a lesson that can be applied to another story, situation, or real life. The Color Purple is about courage. Basically the courage to continue in the face us unsurmounting odds. Its about self identity and self valuation. Additionally, its about the connection women have…Celie and Shug, Celie and Nettie, and Celie and Sophia….women whose life experiences were different yet the same in that they were victimized them as 3rd class citizens…carrying the burden of being both black and a woman. Still, the unifying nature of sisterhood helped each to find herself and allow each to see her worth through the eyes of the other.

All the “theme” really means is what patterns did the author want you to notice about the story. I think you already found that.
“Some important words” is just what you needed! Just take those words and try to flesh them out a little. Like: ‘how people deal with adversity” or, even better, “How self-worth changes the way people react to adversity.”

it is the subject or idea of the story. for example, you need to show love, violence, adversity, self woth and friendship as how it applies in the story or relates to the ideas in the book. if the violence, for example, is based on racism or domestic violence, you don’t want to show two pokemon fighting or a war scene.

I would take the main characters and try to decide what their goals are, what they are looking for in life.
