How do you increase volume of water- physics experiment?

My physics teacher added a specific volume of water to one side of a box. We couldn’t see inside the box. More water came out on the other side of the box, but it was blue. What was in the box? We guess that there was water in the tube inside the box and it was simply pushed out. We were wrong. It is somehow related to physics. Any suggestions?

Two possibilities:

Heating water increases its volume, so if there were a heat source…

As for blue, if the water is holding something in suspension, the volume of the suspension is greater than the volume of just the water.
