How do you find the equation of a line when given?

either the y-intercept and one point or the x-intercept and one point?

the general form of a line is y = mx + b

if you have the y-intercept and a point you kno the b value (it’s the y-intercept)

you can then plug in the x and y from the point to get the slope (m)

ex: y-int = 5 through point (2, 11)

y = mx + 5

11 = m(2) + 5

6 = 2m

m = 3

y = 3x + 5

========================================

if you have the x-intercept and one point you can first use the points to find slope and then plug in one of th epoints to get b

ex: x-int = 2 through (4, 8)

the x-int is the point (2, 0)

m = (8 – 0)/(4 – 2) = 4

y = 4x + b

8 = 4(4) + b

-8 = b

y = 4x – 8

first plot the one point and the x or y intercept

then drawn the line through the points

y=mx+b

find the slope (m) by counting up then over

so for example, up 4 over 3 your slope is 4/3 (rise over run)

put that in the formula

y=4/3x+b

b the y intercept so if you give you 4 then just plug it in

y=4/3x+4

but if they dont give it to you see where your line crosses the y (vertical) axis and put that number in

Y and X (in the equation) will always be there so dont worry about putting numbers in there

your final is

y=4/3x+4
