You should ALWAYS have a grabber no matter what. You need a hook for any and every type of writing/essay in order to draw someone in. Whether it’s narrative, descriptive, expository, or persuasive, a hook makes for great writing.

Any grabber that APPEALS TO THE SENSES is a plus. By appealing to the senses, I mean using things like imagery and description to draw people into the writing (so they can almost feel it, hear it, smell it, taste it, etc.).

For instance, if you were writing something about nature, you could do this:

Nature. Lush, verdant greens immediately capture the eyes as powder blues and wispy whites overhead vie for the same attention. The sharp twitter of newborn birds echo off the aged canyon walls whilst silent, gentle waters run slowly down the sloping mountains…

Maybe that’s not the best example (as my brain isn’t functioning correctly right now, so it’s the best I can do…), but you get the idea, right?

A grabber is anything that draws the reader into your writing. It peaks their interest enough that they want to continue reading. This should be used in all forms of writing with the exception of technical/instruction manuals. A question is a good style do draw the reader in to want to read on to find the answer.

A good essay, no matter what kind it may be, should always begin with a grabber.
