The two answers above are absolutely correct.

e.g 7/8 +3/4

You make both denominators the same and that you do by multiplying them

7/8+3/4=(7×4/8×4)+(3×8/4×8) [remember that whatever you do to the denominator you must do to the numerator]

=28/32+24/32=(28+24)/32 = 52/32——–(i)

or using their LCM: Lowest Common Multiple.

(7×1/8×1) + (3×2/4×2) = 7/8+6/8 = (7+6)/8 = 13/8 ——-(ii)

= 1whole number and 5/8

If you use a LCM most times you will not have your answer in a form that will need breaking down like —(i) above= 13/8 same as in ——(ii) when divided by 4 [numerator and denominator]

change them first into similar fractions (fractions with the same denominator) by finding the LCD or least common denominator of the fractions given…

ex. 1/4 + 3/6 =?

multiples are 4 = 4, 8, 12,16

6 = 6, 12, 18

in this case 12 would be the LCD..you will then have to convert both the original fractions to its equivalent fraction having the LCD as the new denominator…

ex. for 1/4..the process would be 12 (LCD or new denominator) divided by 4 (orig denominator)..that would be 3 then multiply 3 to 1 (the orig numerator) that would be 3 (new numerator) and the resulting fraction would be 3/12.. and 3/12 is actually equivalent to 1/4 in its simplest form..

for 3/6..just do the same process.. 12 (LCD or new denominator) divided by 6 (orig denominator)..that would be 2 then multiply 2 to 3 (the orig numerator) that would be 6 (new numerator) and the resulting fraction would be 6/12.. and 6/12 is is actually equivalent to 3/6 in its simplest form..

and now that you have fractions of the same denominator, just add both the numerators and simply copy the denominator…3/12 + 6/12 = 9/12 or 3/4 in its simplest form..

hope this helps=)

Make the denominators equal. The simplest way is to multiply both fractions with the denominator.

ex.

8/9 + 4/5=

5*(8/9) + 9*(4/5) =

40/45 + 36/45 =

76/45

You need to change one or both of them, so that they have the same denominator. As an example, suppose you want to add a half and a third. You can change the half to 3 sixths, and the third to 2 sixths, then add 3 and 2 for 5 sixths.
