My suggestions are as follows:

— I’m not sure where you are from, but in Baltimore, one of the biggest gang issues we have here is witness intimidation. Over this summer, there have been at least 2 witnesses gunned down themselves in order to prevent them from testifying later. In addition, our city is where the “Snitches get Stitches” video was taped. This also discourages anyone from “snitching” or telling on anyone who has committed a crime and threatens everything a beating to death if one were to snitch.

— Violent crime rates. Look at the following link, and you will be able to see that a shocking number of violent crimes are tied to gang activity. http://www.heritage.org/Research/UrbanIssues/bg1834.cfm

— Finally, I think a great topic, seeing as that you are in school, is to look at how gangs infiltrate our schools. Currently, at my school, we have at least 20 gang members who use lunch time and other “free periods” as time to recruit new members, intimidate members from the rival gang, and to have meetings. This does affect the climate of a school in a multitude of ways.

I think you have a plethora of information available to you, but I think if you narrow your topic down to perhaps 3 or 4 specific arenas, you will have an easier time finding information to use in your paper.
