2. Follow the traditional essay layout: [introduction, pgh 1 (subpoints 1,2,3) pgh 2 (subpoints 1,2,3) pgh 3 (subpoints 1,2,3) and conclusion]
3. Use correct spelling/grammar:
4. Avoid using words that you are unsure about: Don’t blindly use a thesaurus and pick random words, it will (more often than not) make you look like you don’t know what you’re doing
5. Never use “I”: “I think”, “I know”, “In my opinion”, etc.
6. Avoid contractions: Such as: “don’t” (do not) “they’re (they are), etc.
7. No slang.
8. Focus on facts: as opposed to focusing on ideas (unless it is part of the requirements)
9. Make everything obvious: Assume your reader knows nothing about what you are talking about.
10. Avoid rhetorical questions: “So how is this possible?”, etc. This creates a more casual tone.
11. Spell out abbreviations before using them: For example: “The Central Intelligence Agency is an agency of central intelligence. In the CIA……”
12. Do not use “you” in second person: “So as you’re walking down the street…”
13. Specify pronouns before using them: “Mary is a girl. She has brown hair.”
14. Omit Needless Words (ONW): Never say in 10 words what you can say in 5.
I hope that helps!
Make your sentences strong statements (don’t show that your iffy, but if your just giving theories you could say stuff like “it is possible that…”), use formal words (avoid: like (most modern uses at least), stuff, ok, very, gotta, etc), use CORRECT spelling and punctuation, avoid conjuctions (such as don’t), write with a thesaurus to avoid sounding stupid AND to avoid repeating certain words, make sure your thesis is in your introduction and conclusion but they are not the exact same sentence worded slightly different, and be sure your ideas are clear and your paragraphs flow well (a reader knows how you went from one idea to another)
hope this helps!
