How can I remember what I read?

I have to read A Tale of Two Cities (by Charles Dickens) for my summer reading project. It’s hard for me to recall events that occur and I always forget what happens right after I finish reading. I don’t think I have any learning disorders…the book is just plain boring. Recalling the events in an interesting book is no problem for me; how do I grasp what is happening in a boring book?

Take notes. Have a sticky note near by where you can write down details that should be remembered. Also, write down characters names and keep a list of important things they did throughout the novel to make them distinguished. You can also reread if you have time, but sometimes this is too time consuming. Be sure to remove all distractions, don’t sit in a room that is full of activity. Don’t answer the phone or chat online while trying to read, that is confusing – you need a solid amount of time to dedicate to reading an involved book like that one. Be sure to read up on the novel (from educated authors) so you know what other people have to say about the book. Discussing it will also really help, so if you know someone else reading it, meet up and talk about it as you read. If not, ask a parent to listen to you talk about the book, even if they are just there to hear your ideas. One last thing that works for me: reading the book upside down. I know it sounds nuts, but your brain is forced to concentrate on the words and processes the information better when it is slowed down. That doesn’t work for everyone though, if you get a headache, flip the book back over and go back to taking notes. Good luck, that is a good book…you’ll get through it!

What i do when im reading a book i can tell i dont like and dont want to remember is write down all the main events.. in bullet in a note book chapter by chapter (right after u finish the chpt). It helps a lot. Dont write a novel or anything just small things that happened that seem important. This way u can always go back and refresh ur memory..

works for me..

if u try it i hope it works for

Geez…I know how you feel. I had to read Great Expectations (by Charles Dickens as well)! By the time I was done reading a few chapters, I felt like going to sleep and I didn’t remember anything I had just read (and I am usually a quick reader)! That is why I forced myself to take notes. That way, I could still skim but take in the information.

Charles Dickens is the most boring author…ever.

Lots of good advice from those responding regarding taking notes or using cliffnotes. Another thing is checking out if a movie was made on a particular book. I know there are several adaptations of a Tale of Two Cities. You can go to IMDB.com, look up the title to see if a movie was made and read the Plot Summary, or rent the movie. Not all Movies are word for word like the book of course, but sometimes watching the movie first might make reading it easier to remember.

Make a some notes. I guess this is a chapter book, so after you read one chapter just write it down, what is so important in this section.

I can understand that, when the book is boring, me too having any interest to read that stuff.

It’s called “Charles Dickens Syndrome”. No but really, he is one of the most boring authors ever. I couldn’t even finish his books because I got so bored reading them. Just read Sparknotes or Cliffsnotes. They saved my life in high school.

Make a list of the chapters, and give every chapter a name that you come up with, write a short summary and list the characters that appear. That’ll help you remember and will also show you where to find which episode if you want to read up on something again.

It sounds really boring but… take notes. That way you will have read the book and remembered it as well. Either this, or read it over and over trying to grasp the concept!!

Interpret each chapter when you’re finished with it. Then write down what you interpreted but if you still can’t remember what you read then you do it after every page.
