Ordinary compasses do not work in space. Only inertial navigation systems are usable. Various inertial force measuring systems are integrated by a computer to track the position of a space craft. As an interesting aside: in he early days of manned space craft the on board computer failed and the astronaut had to use an early version of a HP hand held calculator to compute reentry.

Navigation on water requires wind and tide forces to be figured into the normal engine propulsion values. Various accelerometers and anemometers are used to evaluate these forces and plug into other data for navigation.

The examples in engineering are too numerous. Press tools. CNC machines, auto engineering, process equirment like centrifuges, all use force measurement in one form or another.

Believe it has to do with the friction found in space navigation (when they return and go up)…and the same in water, and for the engineering of the things…(also such as planes, boats, even cars, etc)….used for these types of navigation.

That’s what I come up with just thinking about it… don’t know how to clue my source in on what I really want!

Sorry…good luck!
