Lia’s Dwarfs

History question..?

WHAT DO BUDDHISTS BELIEVE?

I have picked one proverb from The Dhamapada.

I have to explain what the proverb means and how it might be applied to life.

the response needs to include the following..

1. the proverb in your own words

2. examples from real life which illustrate the point of the proverb. you may write about events in your personal life which demonstrate the meaning of this proverb or you may use examples from the lives of people you know or about whom you have read or heard

3. your determination as to whether this proverb teaches a belief unique to Buddhism or a universal idea found in many deggerent realigions and philosophies

The proverb I have chosen is..

“Bad deed, and deeds hurtful to oursleves, are easy to do; what is beneficial and good, that is very difficult to do.”

Any ideas?

Thanks for any and all help.

1. It’s easy to hurt oneself and others, but difficult to truly ourselves and those around us.

2. I don’t have a specific example from my life on this one, but here’s a few scenarios that could apply to you or someone you know: Getting addicted to drugs (which is harmful to you and possibly others) is very easy, while breaking that addiction is not. Serving other people (which is good) is very difficult, but it’s easy to be self-centered and always think about our own needs. It’s easy (or at least easier) to work hard and save up money to buy nice things for ourselves (which could be evil or bad if that’s all we care about), but giving to charity and those in need (which is good) isn’t always easy to do.

3. The moral of this proverb is found in many different religions, including many Christian sects.
