History 7th Grade Ancient Midevil Times England?

The question says:

Do you think a law of succession would have prevented the Battle of Hastings? Why?

But I am confused because the battle of hastings was because King Edward died childless, and the right to the English throne was in question. So an English assembly chose Edward’s brother-in-law, Harold, as King. But Edwards cousin who was the Duke of Normandy, thought that he deserved it. So him and his infantry invaded England and that was the Battle of Hastings..I thought that WAS the law of succession, but the question isnt making sense! HELP!! the book is Across the Centuries if anyones wondering

Until that time it was just the oldest son born to the current(deceased)king. But there were no laws for if a king died childless. So when Edward died without a son the whole nation was thrown into confusion.

Yes,I believe that a law of succession would have saved lives in this instance.Because it would have determined which one of them inherited the throne, and there would be no reason to fight unless the other was just a greedy creep.

NO! If the english assembly CHOSE, then that is NOT a law of succession. A law of succession would be like American presidency, where it is written who takes over next (ie Vice-Pres). You have to have it written in law, so that there is no confusion, no debate, no ambiguity.
