Help with this math problem [ algebra]?

So, I have no idea how to do this problem, 6n- n. It says to simplify the expression by combining like terms. How do you do this problem?? You don’t have to tell me the answer, just explain how to do it?!?! Thanks

you have to remember that there is always a 1 before the variable if the variable is alone.

so 6n-1n = 5n

Like terms are those which have the same variable at the end.

eg.,2x,3x,5x

2s,6s

6g,9g,etc.

Here,6nand n are like terms .

To simplify the expressions with like terms, all you have to do is simplify them first without considering the varible ,then add it at the end.

The way to solve your problem is:

6n-n

=>6n-1n

So,first solve 6-1,ie,5

then add the variable(here,n) at the end.

So the answer is 5n.

P.S.I tried answering your question without giving you the answer, but I wasn’t successful.

Hope you understand!:)

6 x n – 1 x n = 5 x n

=6n – 1n = 5n

=6n – n = 5n

=5n

by distributive property: 6n-n.. n is the term referred to because it is present in the expressions 6n and -n..so just take it out you’ll have n(6-1)..simply 5n..

Does it tell you what n is?

It normally uses letters more like x, y, and z, or, a, b, and c. So, I’m not sure what it means.

After looking at what the rest have written then I agree that it might be 5n. I may have been looking much deeper than was required. At college we missed out such elementary things and went right onto another level.
