X=allowance

1/4X = video rental

$9.50= movie

$19.50=left over.

This problem is just a matter of solving for X. The trickiest part is knowing where on the equation to put the left over $19.50. In fact, you can look at it like another expense. Thus:

1/4 X + $9.50 + $19.50 = X

Examine this equation till you really get a feel for what it’s saying. The allowance is X. And one quarter of the allowance PLUS $9.50 PLUS $19.50 all equal the allowance, that is they equal X.

Then simply solve for X

$9.50 + $19.50 = X – 1/4X

$29.00 = 3/4 X

Now divide each side by 3/4 to clear the 3/4 from the equation.

$29.00//3/4 = X//3/4 (that is 29 divided by three fourths equals X divided by three fourths

$38.67 = X.

First, you add the amount he had left to how much he spent on the movie.

$19.50 + $9.50 = $29

That’s how much was left after he spent 1/4 of his allowance, which means $29 is 3/4 of his allowance. All you have to do now is find out how much 1/4 of his allowance is, then multiply that by 4. To fink how much 1/4 is, do:

$29 [division sign] 3 = about $9.67

so….his total allowance was:

$9.67 x 4 = $38.68

The first step in determining Tony’s allowance is to establish an equation that represents his spending and saving. We know that Tony has spent one-quarter of some amount of his money, so we identify this part of the equation as (1/4)(x). We know that Tony has spent 9.50 on a movie and has saved 19.50. The sum of these three quantities will give us our equation:

(1/4)(x)+9.50+19.50=Total Allowance

From here we must solve for the total allowance by getting our variable on one side of the equation and our constants on the other:

(1/4)(x)=29.00

Now we must solve for x:

(x/4)=29.00

(4/1)(x/4)=(29)(4)

x=116

To check our answer:

(116/4)-9.50-19.50

29-9.50-19.50

29-29=0

All of Tony’s money is accounted for, so we can assume that Tony’s allowance is $116.

Rachel is right. Tony only spent a 1/4 of his allowance. than spend 9.50. If you add 19.50 and 9.50 you get 29. So it 29=3/4x. x= $38.67

The way they get 116 is they are using 1/4x which is wrong. If they did that it should be x-1/4x-9.5=29. By using 1/4x they are saying tony only has 1/4 of his allowance left, but he only spent a 1/4 of it.

The answer is most definitely $38.67.

The equation that corresponds with your problem is:

1/4 X – 9.50 = 19.50 (where x represents allowance)

1/4 X = 29 ==> X = 29*4 ==> X = $116

Tony’s allowance is $116.00

work backwards

9.50 + 19.50= 29

he had $29, and had already spent 1/4 of his allowance, which means that $29 was 3/4 of his allowance

29=3/4x

x=$38.67

Work backwards.

19.50plus 9.50 is 29.00.

Then that means that 29 is 3/4 of his allowance.

So 29=3x/4.

x=38.67
