heres a 2 column proof

ab=bc def of a midpoint

2x=6x-8 substitution prop of equality

2x+8=6x subtraction prop of equality

8=4x subtraction prop of equality

2=x division prop of equality

6(2)-8=BC

12-8=BC

We are saying that AC is the line and B is the mid-point? Is that what you mean?

If so…

B is the midpoint of the line which means that the distance between A and B is the same as the distance between B and C. So AB = BC.

You have values for AB and BC so substitute those into the equation.

AB = BC

2x = 6x-8

which gives…

8 = 4x

8/4 = x

2 = x

Now you want the value of BC, so substitute x…

BC = 6x-8

BC = 6(2)-8

BC = 12-8

BC = 4

Well, because B is the midpoint. Then AB would have to equal BC. So:

AB=BC

2x=6x-8

You have to subtract 2x from each side and add 8 to each side to get:

8=4x

Then, divide both sides by 4 to solve for x:

2=x

Next, use the original equation for BC (6x-8) and substitute in the value you found for x (2)

BC=6(2)-8

BC=12-8

BC=4

The value of BC is therefore 4.

(Sorry, but it’s really hard to show the subtractions and everything on here. I did my best.)
