An anecdote is just a short story, so you can write pretty much anything.

Start out with a theme in mind, such as friendship, loyalty, generousity, et cetera.

Ex1: dealing with loss

Then build around that by thinking up characters and how the theme will be expressed. Get a basic idea of your plot. Keep it simple-this is not a novel.

Ex1b: A young woman who lives alone is coming home from work. She finds an abandoned kitten in a cardboard box in an alley. The kitten is sick and the girl takes him home to care for him. She doesn’t have enough money to afford a vet. She takes care of him all night long but he still dies.

The only thing left is to actually write the story. Remember to have a beginning, a middle, and especially an end. The reader must feel like the story has ended.

And some more advice: a picture is worth a thousand words. Paint what is going on through words. You don’t have to say: she felt lonely. Instead make a scene of what is going on internally: The woman sat alone in her apartment, holding loosely onto the eye dropper she had used to feed her kitten.
