Juan drives to work. Because of traffic, he averages 22 miles per hour. He returns home averaging 32 miles per hour. The total travel time is 2 1/4 hours. Using an equation find the time he spends driving to work.

distance = rate times time. Since the distance to and from work is the same, so is the rate times time. If t = time driving to work, 2.25 – t = time going home.
So 22t = 32(2.25 – t)
22t = 72 – 32t
54t = 72
t = 72/54 which is 1 1/3 hours.
