let n = number of 2 racket cartons

then 38-n = number of 3 racket cartons

the number of rackets held can be expressed as

2n + 3(38-n) = 100

2n + 114 – 3n = 100

114 -100 = 3n = 2n

14 = n

There are 14 carton of 2 rackets and

There are 38-14 = 24 cartons of 3 rackets

check: 14(2) + 24(3) = 28 + 72 = 100

3x + 2y = 100

x + y = 38

Where x is equal to the number of cartons holding 3 rackets and y is equal to the number of cartons holding 2 rackets. The first equation represents the total number of rackets and the second equation represents the total number of cartons.

Substitute (38 – x ) for y and then distribute and solve for x.

3x + 2(38 – x) = 100

After you get x, plug it back into the x + y = 38 equation and solve for y.

Have fun!
