let x be the width and y be the length

P = 2(x + y)

23 = 2(x + y)

11.5 = x + y

Area = xy

solve for y

y = 11.5 – x

Area = x(11.5 – x)

Area = 11.5x – x^2

A(X)=x*[(23-2x)/2]

x=length of one side

For example:

x=4

A(x)= 4*[(23-8)/2]

4*[15/2]

4*7.5
