help? i forgot the rule??
17 + (-18)? im not asking you to give me an answer, just tell me if I add or subtract. I know to take the sign of the bigger number, which is negative, but I forgot if I add or subtract.

for the first one its a negative sign so its 17-18 (= -1)
for the second one its just positive so its still -21+30 (=7)

To make it simpler you might as well just take out the + and look at it as 17-18 because that’s what it is.

two positive numbers add
one positive one negative substract
one necgative one positive = substract
two negatives = add the quantities and the result is a negative number
