Help? Algrebra again geez it sucks?

Please help me! Can you work out the problem and tell me how you got the answer? Heres the problem:

Write as an algebric expression: the sum of an integer and four times the next consecutive integer.

Thanx!

Let the integer be x

so the next consecutive integer would be x + 1

Adding the integer and four times the next consecutive integer would be:

x + 4(x +1)

So you need to express something (call that x?) plus (that’s ‘sum’) four times the next consecutive integer.

Well, let’s see, we don’t know what the integer after x is because we don’t know what x is, do we? But we DO know that the next integer is x plus 1 and we write that algebraically as x+1. What is four times x+1? You can write this as

4 (x+1). That is four times x PLUS four times one.

So something (x) plus four times (x+1) could be written as

x+4(x+1) or as x+4x+4 or as 5x+4

Now wait, how can you be sure this gobbledy-**** is correct? Let’s try substituting a couple of numbers for x and see if it works out. Let’s say that x=2

So the x (that’s two) plus four times the next integer (that’s 4X3=12) and that makes 2+12, which of course is 14. Now let’s try the two substitution for x in the algebraic expression we came up with:

5(x)+4 That would be 5 times 2 which is ten, plus four, and that equals 14. Hey! That’s just what we said it would be!! Ok, that one worked. Let’s just try one more to make sure. How about five?

So the sum of an integer (that’s a five) plus four times the next integer (a six, so that’s 4 times six and that equals 24) would be five plus 24 or 29. Now, does that come out the same if we use the algebraic expression 5x+4? Let’s see. Five times five is 25, plus 4 is 29. Yep, it came out the same again. I’m willing to believe that it will work for any number but you can plug some more in just to make sure if you want to.

Well, does that help? Hope so. Math is fun!

When presented with a word problem, you need to take it piece by piece and substitute numbers, variables and symbols for the words…

the sum (now you know you’ll be adding something) of an integer (this is an unknown so you need a variable, like X) and (this is ALWAYS a key word that lets you know you need a plus sign) four (4) times (*) the next consecutive integer (X + 1)

I hope you’ve sought out extra math help from your school/parents

X=n+4(n+1)

My best English translation is

Answer = An integer + the next integer multiplied by 4.

n+1 is in parenthesis because you want to multiply the whole value by 4. Without parenthesis the answer would be different based on the order of operations. (PEMDAS)
