Jim and Della love each other more than they love themselves, because they both sell their most important items they have so they can buy the other person a gift.
Della sells her hair so she can buy the chain for Jim’s watch.
Jim sells his watch that has been in his family for a long time to buy Della combs for her hair.

Jim and Della have unselfish love for each other because their love is greater than their possessions. Their physical possessions are now useless, but they gave up something they loved in order to show their love for each other and make the other person happy. Hope that makes sense.
