It’s about an orphan who is sent to London mysteriously to become a gentleman. Basically. If you want a few more details, it’s about a boy named Pip who lives with his sister and her blacksmith husband. Pip helps a convict and befriends the daughter of a rich old woman before he is sent to London to learn how to be a gentleman. But he soon discovers that the old woman, Miss Havisham, and her daughter, Estella, are not what they seem, and neither is the convict he helped years ago…

Jen in another query you stated you had read the book and understand it; if that is true why are you asking what the main idea of the book is? You really need to do your own work. Asking others to do your assignment for you rather destroys the idea of you getting an education.

em-uh-lee got the facts right, except one thing, estella isnt miss havisham’s daughter, she is only raised by her. miss havisham took estella under her wings not to raise her or be the sweet tender mother for her, but to teach her how to break men’s hearts bcoz miss havisham was deserted the day of her wedding. she kept the clock on the wall on the exact time when the man she loved deserted her and she kept her wedding dress that became yellowish over the years. estella is taught to break pip’s heart
