Grammar Question?

I want to write something like: “I want you to explain in detail the thoughts of this writer” should I write it like that or should I write “I want you to explain, in detail, the thoughts of this writer.” with the commas?

Without the commas. Commas are used where there would normally be a pause in speaking it. The original way you wrote it is fine

The old time purists in grammar would say to always use the commas. Some of the newer references say to use the commas only when it clarifies the meaning or when there is a pause, represented by the commas. So some authorities would say the commas are not needed here. In the sentence you write, I think the commas should go there but some may say not.

If you are writing the comment , then without commas, (unless you intentionally want to place special emphasis on ‘detail’

Hope this helps!

Either way is correct. The only change is the emphasis of the sentence. I would use the commas, myself, but I’m pretty sure that either way is grammatically correct.

I often wonder myself, so I do as I please. How about only one comma after detail? I think commas add more meaning.
