Mr. Cunningham was bitter and proud. He was a part of the mob trying to lynch the Black man because he was a poor man and the only elitism he had to cling to was his Caucasian skin and he was too ignorant to see the immorality of the code of the South.

That he voted for conviction in the trial was no surprise. He neither had the intelligence or the self-confidence to go against majority opinion.
